Many, many years ago in Paris, young Louis XIII became the King of France when his father died. Louis married Anne of Austria, and tried to be a good leader. But Cardinal Richelieu, his advisor, disliked the queen and was also jealous of the king.
Cardinal: I am older and smarter than King Louis. I should be the king!
Very often, the king's musketeers fought with the cardinal's guards. And all that, while France had a serious enemy to fight: the English!

Meanwhile, d’Artagnan, a brave, young man, left his town in Gascony to follow his dream – to become a musketeer!
Father: Son, here's a horse, a sword and some money... and a letter for the Captain of the Musketeers.... And take my advice…. Do not be afraid to fight; always be brave, and listen to the king!
Mother: Here…. Take this recipe. It is for a medicine; it will cure any wound.

It was a long journey, and d'Artagnan stopped at an inn. A man with a scar laughed at him.
Rochefort: Ha ha! What a funny yellow horse! Did it run away from the circus?
D’Artagnan: Say sorry to my horse, sir, or come and fight…
D’Artagnan pulled out his sword; but a friend of the man with the scar was behind him and hit him on the head. Everything went black…

While d’Artagnan was on the ground, the man with the scar talked to a beautiful woman in a carriage.
Rochefort: Milady de Winter, you must go to England to spy on the Duke of Buckingham. The Cardinal wants to know his secrets.
Milady: Don’t worry, Rochefort! I’m good at spying.

In Paris, d'Artagnan saw the man with the scar again and ran after him. As he was running, he bumped into Athos, one of the king’s musketeers. Athos got angry and he grabbed d'Artagnan. They had an argument, and they agreed to duel at the old square at noon. D’Artagnan chased the man with the scar again. He grabbed his coat, but it wasn’t the man with the scar. It was Porthos, another musketeer!
Porthos: You fool! My new coat! For that we’ll duel at the old square at noon!
D’Artagnan: Not at noon… at one! Sorry, now, I must run!

Next, a third musketeer, Aramis, dropped a beautiful white handkerchief on the ground. D’Artagnan picked it up, but when he gave it to Aramis, he saw a very angry face.
Aramis: Hey! Don’t touch that! It's a gift from a lady!
D’Artagnan: Okay, okay! I know.... Let’s duel at the old square at two o’clock!
At the old square around noon, the three musketeers looked at each other and started laughing. They were all there to duel with the same man!

At that moment, some of the cardinal’s men appeared. There was a law against dueling, so the guards tried to arrest them. D’Artagnan and the three musketeers pulled out their swords. They fought the cardinal’s men together until they ran away. After the fight, the four of them were friends. The next day, the four men went to the palace to see the king.
King: The cardinal had some complaints about you…
Athos: But, King Louis, they attacked first – all ten of them! We had to fight!
King: Hmmm…. Ten of his men, you say? But there are only three of you… and this young man! Ha! My musketeers are the bravest men in France. The cardinal’s men shouldn’t fight with my men.

The cardinal heard the king and got very angry. He decided to do something to hurt him.
Cardinal: Ah, King Louis. You are a good man, but you let people trick you.
King Louis: What are you saying? Is this about my musketeers again?
Cardinal: No, it’s about Queen Anne. She has a secret…. Do you remember the diamond brooch you gave her? Ask her to wear it at the ball next week and you'll see.... She won’t wear it. She gave it to the Duke of Buckingham, your enemy

Constance: Brave d'Artagnan, Queen Anne needs your help. You must bring her diamond brooch from England before the ball. The Duke of Buckingham has it!
D’Artagnan: Don’t worry, pretty Constance. I’ll get it back. I will leave for London tonight.

Constance gave d'Artagnan a letter from the queen for the Duke of Buckingham and d'Artagnan asked his friends to help him.
Musketeers: To London! All for one and one for all!

The Duke of Buckingham read the queen's letter carefully.
Duke: Our countries are enemies, but I will help Queen Anne because we are good friends. But the brooch isn’t here any more. Someone stole it!
D’Artagnan: Oh, no!
Duke: I have an idea! I will order another one from my jewellery maker – and it will be exactly the same!

The day of the ball came, and everyone was waiting for the queen. King Louis was very nervous, but when he saw his wife, he smiled.

D’Artagnan waited and waited for Constance at the old square. Suddenly, a woman called from her window.
Woman: Hey! Young man! Are you waiting for a beautiful young woman? A man with a scar took her away. He looked dangerous!
D’Artagnan: Oh, no! Him again!

D’Artagnan and the musketeers looked everywhere for Constance, but she was nowhere. Then, one day, d'Artagnan saw Milady in the park.
D’Artagnan: Aha! That woman knows the man with the scar! We must talk.

Milady was an interesting woman. D'Artagnan liked her very much. He stopped thinking of Constance and he visited Milady every day. One day, Milady’s maid talked to him.
Maid: Your life is in danger! Milady is a cruel woman – she destroys men. Go away and never come back!
D’Artagnan: I don’t believe you. Prove it!

The maid hid d'Artagnan in a room beside Milady’s bedroom.
Maid: Wait here, and you will see.
Milady: Lazy girl, come here! Is that silly d'Artagnan still here?
Maid: No, Milady, he left.
Milady: Good! He is so boring, but he is useful. He can kill the Count de Wardes. I want to get my money back! Then, it will be d'Artagnan’s turn to disappear.

D’Artagnan was angry, but he visited Milady again the next day. He just couldn’t stay away from her.
Milady: D'Artagnan, take my ring, and remember me, your unhappy friend.... The Count wants to be my husband. But I do not love him!
D’Artagnan: No! I won’t let this happen!

D'Artagnan took the ring and left. He had to meet Athos. When Athos saw the ring, his face turned white.
Athos: Where did you find this ring? It belongs to Charlotte. She was my wife…. It’s a long story. She was a cruel woman – in fact, she tried to kill me once!
D’Artagnan: Well, this is Milady's ring. She is the most beautiful woman I know.
Athos: Hmmm…. Is there a tattoo of a fleur-de-lis on her left shoulder?
D’Artagnan: A fleur-de-lis? Only criminals have those tattoos. I’ll try to find out.

D’Artagnan (thinking): Athos was right!

At La Rochelle, d’Artagnan fought bravely. Impressed, the young king sent a letter to thank the hero. However, the young man had enemies, too. One day, two men tried to kill him. D’Artagnan made one of them run away; the other fell to his knees.
Man: Please don’t hurt me. Milady paid us to kill you!
D’Artagnan: I forgive you. You can live. Come with me!

D’Artagnan and the man went to d'Artagnan's room. There was delicious food on the table.
D’Artagnan: Look at this! The musketeers probably prepared all this!
D’Artagnan went to thank his friends for the dinner. The man was hungry and sat down to eat. When the four friends came into the room again, they found the man on the floor. There was poison in the food. (Inset) D’Artagnan: Milady did this!

The musketeers left to find Milady. Outside an inn, they saw her carriage.
Milady: Here is the queen’s brooch. I stole it from the duke, as you said.
Cardinal: Well, I don't need it any more! But I want you to do something else. You must kill the Duke of Buckingham. The English will blame King Louis and I will have more power.
Milady: Yes, I will. But you must kill Constance in return, and put that awful d'Artagnan in prison! I want him to suffer!

When Milady arrived in London, a soldier, John Felton, was waiting for her and arrested her.

Milady: I know he will…. I don’t want the musketeers to find me, so I am staying at the convent. And guess what... Constance is there too! The silly girl thinks we are friends.
Rochefort: Then, I will come and get you both from there!

At the convent, Milady tried to make Constance go with her.
Milady: Constance, the cardinal’s men will find you here. We must leave.
Constance: But I promised the queen! I must wait here!
Milady: Listen! Horses! Oh dear, the cardinal’s men are coming!

But it wasn’t the cardinal’s men – it was the musketeers! Constance called d'Artagnan in a weak voice.
Constance: Is that you, d'Artagnan? I don’t feel well! Hold me!
D’Artagnan: Constance! Don’t worry, I am here.
Constance: It’s over, d'Artagnan. I’m dying!
Aramis: There's poison in her glass! Milady did this! Hurry, Athos, she mustn't escape!

At the palace, King Louis congratulated d'Artagnan and his friends for fighting so bravely against his enemies. The cardinal was glad because the musketeers did not tell the king everything they knew about him. So, he made d'Artagnan the new Captain of the Musketeers. A new day began for France.
